WEDNESFIELD V SANDWELL MIDLAND LEAGUE JULY 18TH 2010

A quick trip across the Black Country saw Sandwell take on Wednesfield in the Midland League.With both teams fielding weakened sides it was to prove an interesting match between experience and youth. A flying start from Matt Smith saw the Sandwell youngster hold off Wednesfield's Mark Griffiths to take the first win of the afternoon.A fine win from Wednesfield's Sam Smith in heat two gave the feisty Wednesfield number three his first win of the day,an excellent pass by Tom Haddock on the last bend of the heat saw Sandwell's Tom Haddock take second spot in front of brother Matt and Wednesfield's Tony Deleon.Top scorer of the day,Lee Smith,took his first win of the match in heat three holding off Wednesfield's Roger Cox and Mick Aris.The third drawn heat of the match in heat four saw Wednesfield's Mark Griffiths take the four points from Sandwell's David Ball,a strong ride from Wednesfield youngster Mikey Bassi kept Matt Smith on his toes for his third place.Sandwell duo Ricky Johnson and Jamie Ball proved too strong for Wednesfield's new boys Jordan Holdcroft and Harry Everiss in heat five giving the sandwell team their first 7-3 of the meeting.Great team riding by Sam Smith in heat eight allowed Tony De Leon to take second place and three points behind Matt Smith's first spot,the Sandwell rider again showing his strength on the shale.An ever improving Tom Haddock took a strong win in heat nine holding off Wednesfield's Roger Cox and giving the visitors a 6-4 heat win and an eight point lead going into the interval 49-41.   Two back to back wins for Sandwell in heats ten and eleven saw the visitors start to pull out a useful lead but with Mark Griffiths holding his own in heat twelve over Tom Haddock and Roger Cox keeping Matt Smith at bay in heat thirteen the hosts managed to keep the score back to ten points difference 70-60.Heat fourteen saw Jamie Ball take his second heat win of the match holding off Tony De Leon and with Mikey Bassi rolling over the line in third Wednesfield were still in with a shout for victory but another win in heat fifteen by Lee Smith saw the hosts chance of taking the match slipping away.Not to be outdone by brother Lee,Matt Smith took an easy win in heat sixteen from Jordon Holdcroft and effectively securing the match for the Sandwell team.Wins from Wednesfield's veterans Mark Griffiths and Mick Aris in the final two heats came a little too late to have any impact on the afternoon and Sandwell ran out winners by six points, 93-87
