Aces Opening Premier League Derby Match a Cracker
2009-03-15 22:03 by Dave Jewkes
Wednesfield started the 2009 premier season with a sparkling win over local rivals Birmingham Monarchs 89 - 87 although the score line looks close the Aces were in control of the match from start to finish using their tactical know how over the premier league new boys. Once the Aces had got their noses in front from a 7-2 in heat two from Sam Smith and Terry Norman with Birmingham's Lewis Bates excluded at the tapes the Aces just squared most heats along with a few 6-4's and a 7-3.
Lee Aris was in great form notching up a max 20pts as was the other Wednesfield heat leaders with some solid backing from their younger premier riders Sam Smith and Tom Haddock, Chris Jewkes played a great captains role for the Aces with some good team riding with his partners and a key man in the Aces win was comeback star Mark Griffiths.
Birmingham riders fought hammer & tongue all through the match and when their new riders have settled in they will be a force to be reckoned with, Marcus Wadhams stood out for the visitors and was involved in Birmingham's three 7-3 heat wins during the fixture and Errol Thaw returned 12pts from four rides.
On the day the Aces looked the more composed side and there seemed more camaraderie within there camp.
