ACES TOPS IN MIDLAND DERBY

The grand opening of the East Park Wolves' track featured a Midland League derby between the Wolves and Wednesfield Aces on a very cold and windy afternoon in Wolverhampton.

Races one and two saw both teams sharing the heats. In heat three Mick Aris got himself excluded at the tapes for moving, referee Alan Bentley having no choice, so leaving Stuart Bentley to try to save the heat. Aces just raced away to their first 7-3 of the match with Mike Morgans and Sammy Smith all the way,

As the match went on, the Aces banged in another 7-3 in heat six through the Doherty and Tom Haddock pairing to bring the scores 33-26 to the Aces. It was looking as if the Aces were having their own way now and well in command but disaster struck when Mike Morgans in heat seven and Roger Cox in heat eight were both excluded, so by the interval it was one point advantage to Wolves.

Heat 10 saw Matt Haddock excluded after the race had finished so giving Wolves a 5-4. Heats 11 and 12 were shared before race 13 saw a double tapes exclusion to Mick Aris and Stuart Bentley. Wolves had now lost their lead 64-59 to the Aces. Time was now running out for the Wolves as the aces banged in another three 6-4s to give Wednesfield a winning margin of 90-83. Wolves, without the services of Mike Baugh and Richard Lloyd, may have made the different, while the Aces were without Dayle Peace. So the match points go to wednesfield but wolves can only get better.
